How long distance moving is priced

Local moves are usually charged by the hour. Long distance and interstate moves are different: the price is based on the weight or cubic volume of your shipment and the distance it travels, plus any extra services such as packing, storage, stairs, long carries or a shuttle truck.

That means the most useful things you can do for an accurate price are:

  1. List every room, including the basement, attic, garage and storage areas.
  2. Decide what you are not taking before the estimate, not after.
  3. Mention anything unusual: a piano, safe, gym equipment, artwork or antiques.
  4. Tell us about access at both homes: stairs, elevators, parking and long walks to the door.

Federal rules decide what kind of estimate you can get and how much you can be asked to pay at delivery. Our interstate moving guide explains binding, non-binding and not-to-exceed estimates.

Long distance moving timeline

  1. 6 to 8 weeks before: get your estimate, choose your dates and book.
  2. 4 weeks before: sort and give away what you won’t move; ask your new building or HOA for its moving rules.
  3. 2 weeks before: start packing rooms you use least; arrange utilities at both homes.
  4. Moving day: walk through with the crew, check the inventory and bill of lading, and keep documents, valuables and medication with you.
  5. Delivery day: check items against the inventory and note any damage on the paperwork before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cobra Van Lines a licensed interstate mover?

Yes. Cobra Van Lines is registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration under USDOT 4309696 and MC 1679594. You can check both numbers on the FMCSA website before you book.

How is the cost of a long distance move calculated?

Interstate moves are priced by the weight or cubic volume of your shipment and the distance, plus any extra services such as packing, storage, long carries, stairs or shuttle trucks. Your written estimate must list every charge.

What is the difference between a binding and a non-binding estimate?

A binding estimate is a fixed price for the items and services listed. A non-binding estimate can change with the actual weight, but federal rules say you cannot be required to pay more than 110% of it at delivery; any balance is billed at least 30 days later.

How long does a long distance move take?

It depends on distance and season. Your order for service must state an agreed pickup date and a delivery window, and the mover must tell you if pickup or delivery will be late. Ask for both dates in writing before you book.

What protection do I get if something is damaged?

Interstate movers must offer two liability options. Full Value Protection makes the mover repair, replace or pay the current value of a damaged item. Released Value is free but covers only 60 cents per pound per item.

What services are included in a long distance move?

We handle loading, transport and unloading, and can add full or partial packing, unpacking, furniture disassembly and reassembly, crating for fragile items, and short or long-term storage.
